Understanding Alpacas in Winter: Care, Calm, and Connection
January is often a quieter, slower month — a time when nature rests and people look for calm, grounding experiences. It’s also one of the best times to learn about alpacas.
At Rhyndaston Alpacas in Pembrokeshire, winter is when we focus on education, animal care, and sharing knowledge with visitors who want to understand alpacas more deeply — whether they’re considering ownership, planning an experience, or simply curious about these gentle animals.
In this blog, we’ll explore how alpacas live through winter, why education matters, and how learning about alpacas can be surprisingly good for wellbeing.
How Alpacas Naturally Thrive in Winter
Alpacas are exceptionally well-adapted to colder months. Originating from the high Andes, they evolved to cope with low temperatures, strong winds, and harsh conditions.
Winter facts about alpacas:
- Their dense fleece provides natural insulation
- They regulate body temperature efficiently
- Dry, well-ventilated shelters are more important than warmth
- They remain active and social throughout winter
At Rhyndaston Alpacas, winter is a time of careful observation, fleece monitoring, nutrition management, and preparation for the year ahead. Education during this season helps visitors understand just how resilient — and quietly fascinating — alpacas really are.
Winter Care Notes: What Alpacas Need in the UK
Alpacas are naturally well-suited to colder weather, but UK winters do come with a few specific care considerations that we pay close attention to on the farm.
Vitamin D during winter
With reduced daylight in the UK, alpacas produce very little natural vitamin D over the winter months. In our experience, supporting them with appropriate vitamin D supplementation during this time is an important part of maintaining good health, particularly for growing alpacas and breeding females. We include this as part of our normal winter care routine, alongside regular checks on condition and behaviour.
Regular toenail trimming
Alpaca toenails don’t always wear down naturally, especially in wetter winter conditions. Regular trimming throughout the year helps keep them comfortable, balanced, and moving well. Left too long, toenails can affect posture and lead to avoidable foot issues, so this is something we stay on top of as part of routine husbandry.
As with all alpaca care, shared experience matters. Staying connected with other breeders and local alpaca communities can be a valuable way to learn, reflect, and adapt care practices through the seasons.
Why Learning About Alpacas Is So Valuable
Education is at the heart of ethical animal experiences. Whether you’re visiting for wellbeing, considering alpaca ownership, or booking a walk later in the year, understanding alpacas builds respect and confidence.
What people often learn for the first time:
- Alpacas are prey animals and value calm, predictable handling
- Each alpaca has a distinct personality
- Quiet presence is more important than physical interaction
- They communicate through subtle body language
These lessons don’t just apply to alpacas — they encourage mindfulness, patience, and emotional awareness, which is why alpaca experiences are increasingly used for wellbeing support.
Alpacas and Wellbeing: A Natural January Reset
January can feel heavy. Short days, busy minds, and the pressure to “start fresh” can be exhausting.
Spending time learning about alpacas offers something different:
- Slowing down
- Observing rather than doing
- Being present without expectation
Many visitors tell us that simply learning about alpacas — their routines, behaviours, and social bonds — feels grounding and restorative.
This is why our educational approach is woven into alpaca meet & greets, wellbeing sessions, and walks, even in the quieter winter months.
Thinking About Alpaca Ownership? Winter Is the Ideal Time to Learn
If alpaca ownership is something you’ve been considering, winter education is invaluable.
Learning in January allows you to:
- Understand year-round care requirements
- See alpacas in their natural winter state
- Ask practical, honest questions without pressure
- Prepare responsibly before spring opportunities
As a BAS trusted seller with over 5 years’ experience with alpacas, we believe education should always come before ownership.
